HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-10-2017 - FisherrIF'CEIVED COUNCIL MEETING: I — 10 --1 ITEM NO.: PU0,-1: ell JAN 0 9 2017 From: Pam Fisher [ Sent: Monday, January 09, 2017 3:07 PM To: E-mail Council Website <emailcouncii@slocity.o> Subject: Permanent Pickleball Courts To the Honorable Mayor Harmon and City Council Members, I am writing to urge you support the Parks & Recreation Commission's goal to update the Parks & Recreation Element planning document, which is now over 15 year old. The Parks & Recreation Element calls for 10 park acres per 1,000 residents. Currently, it appears, that there are only 3.3 acres of parks per 1,000 residents (as referenced in LUCE EI). I am a Pickleball player and have enjoyed this sport for the last two and a half years. I started in Morro Bay and was happy when San Luis Obispo created space for this sport but it is not enough. Sadly the City has failed to recognize the need to find a way to accommodate those wanting to play Pickleball. The popularity of this sport has really taken off and the limited space and hours allowed for play is inadequate for the number of people that come out to play. I and six to eight others travel two times a week out of town to play because it is so crowded during the allowed times. I would like to see the Commission recognize as other cities have that many of their citizens want a safe place to enjoy this sport more than just the 12 hours per week currently allotted. I am asking for your consideration and the support of the Parks and Recreation Commission to update their planning document to reflect this growth and to include, as a priority, permanent Pickleball opportunities and facilities for the residents of San Luis Obispo. Thank you for your consideration and for your service to our community. Respectfully, Pam Fisher Member of SLO Pickleball Club I
