SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY January 10, 2017 City Council City of San Luis Obispo 990 Palm Street San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 Madam Mayor and City Councilors: LJRAN7C-? 2017 LERK COUNCIL MEETING. - ITEM NO.' ) 1!L 4mA1 sn - Thriving communities invest in preserving and celebrating their histories. The board, staff, and members of the History Center believe that the city's future will be built on the bedrock of our shared experience. The process of creating a complex and diverse local history will forge lasting connections between San Luis Obispo's many ethnic, religious, and cultural groups and honor the important contributions of each. We hope the city will make the preservation and interpretation of its history a priority in the coming budget cycle by supporting the work of its own Cultural Heritage Committee and Jack House Committee; by continuing and expanding its partnership with the History Center, the Railroad Museum, the Veteran's Museum, the Mission Museum, Cal Poly Special Collections and Archives, the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society, and other local history organizations; by working with the San Luis Obispo Downtown Association to improve our historic downtown while retaining its unique sense of place; and by allocating resources to care for the city's own historic properties. The History Center also supports the creation of a downtown arts and cultural district, including live/work housing for local artists, and an eventual application to the state cultural district program. We are excited to see new visions evolve for Mission Plaza and Downtown San Luis Obispo. In particular, the History Center strongly supports new buildings for the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art and the Little Theatre. Later this year, after the city's new concept plans have been approved, we hope to work with the city to develop a memorandum of understanding for the History Center's own much-needed expansion into the adjacent surface parking lot at Monterey and Broad Streets. The History Center partnered with the City and County of San Luis Obispo more than sixty years ago to create its history museum and begin an ongoing collection of local history. With your continued support, we can transform history into a community -wide collaboration, giving voice to all San Luis Obispans. Help us build the resources that our citizens can use to preserve and honor the past, even as we create new history that will inform and inspire future generations. Sincerely, / Eva Ulz President Executive Director San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 ( historycenterslo.org
