As extremely conscientious landlords who not only take good care of our property, but also screen carefully the students to whom we rent, we feel that the rental ordinance has been poorly implemented. We have been unfairly targeted because of those owners/ landlords commonly termed "slumlords." We have been forced to pay $65 for the application + $185 for the inspection. Of course, that's on top of the yearly business license. My husband is a retired contractor and prides himself on keeping our rental property in top notch condition. I'm a local Realtor who carefully screens all of our applicants. I also have the students' parents cosign the rental agreement AND even go so far as having one set of parents sign a master lease. Obviously, if we didn't maintain our property in excellent condition, no conscientious parent would agree to these strict terms. San Luis Obispo's RQN members are simply more vocal than the rest of us and trust me, I've had personal experience with how "over the top" they can be. It is unfair that good landlords such as my husband and myself should be penalized financially because of a few bad landlords and a comparatively few out of control students. There must be a better way to control a minority of negative situations. Thank you for your time and consideration of my comments.
