Subject: Comment on Rental Housing Inspection Program for 2/16 Meeting
Dear Mayor Harmon and San Luis Obispo City Council members:
We are writing to request a total repeal of the SLO Rental Inspection Program. We own rental
property in SLO which is currently subject to inspection under this program.
This ordinance was approved and implemented by a city council majority who were not acting on the
interests of their constituents. It seems to us that the City of SLO is asserting itself inappropriately by
invading the privacy of specific tenant groups. The inspection program is not equitable with respect to
the various rental properties in SLO and is predatory as to our tenants. It focuses intense scrutiny on
single family rental homes and duplexes. The tenants of these properties are subjected to invasion of
their privacy under the guise of building code, health and safety inspections, authorized and
performed under the rental inspection program. Homeowners and tenants in larger rental complexes
are not subjected to this disturbance and inappropriate invasion of their privacy.
We strongly urge you to repeal this unfair ordinance and restore the rights/privacy of all tenant
residents within SLO. Thank you for your consideration.
