I am also an Associate Professor in Ethnic Studies and the Department Chair of Women's & Gender Studies. I am writing to you this evening because I understand that during the public comment period at the San Luis Obispo City Council meeting on T Mar 7, members of our community will request that the City Council agendize a Resolution in Support of San Luis Obispo's Immigrant Community and the Civil Rights, Safety, and Dignity of All San Luis Obispo Residents. Unfortunately, I cannot lend my voice in support of this action in person as I have a teaching conflict at that time. However, I am writing to express my strong support of the request to agendize Resolution in Support of San Luis Obispo's Immigrant Community and the Civil Rights, Safety, and Dignity of All San Luis Obispo Residents and to ask for yours. My primary motivation in asking for your support is my desire for the San Luis Obispo Town Council to 1. affirm its commitment to and respect for all of our community members regardless of immigration status -- including the estimated 9,000 undocumented immigrants in SLO county Public Policy Institute of California. 2013 -- as referenced in the SLO Tribune on Feb 27, 2017) and their loved ones; and 2. ensure that immigrant residents and their loved ones can continue to participate in civic life and daily activities and, when necessary, interact with the San Luis Obispo Police Department and with city officials/staff without fear of intervention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In addition, I want to share that Cal Poly has taken recent actions in support of these commitments and to ask that you join us. For example: • The Cal Poly Academic Senate unanimously passed a Resolution in Support of Cal Poly's Undocumented Community on Jan 24, 2017. • This followed unanimous support of an ASI Board of Directors' Resolution in Support of Services for Undocumented Students on Nov 30, 2016. In addition, Cal Poly actions are in line with CSU Policy as described in • a Memorandum from CSU Chancellor Timothy White on Jul 29, 2016; • the Open_ ;Utter to the CSU Community from CSU Chancellor White on Nov 16, 2016; and • a Memorandum on New Developments Regarding Immigration from Chancellor White on Feb 22, 2017. Finally, as it is useful, I have included links to some of the example resolutions that I have been reviewing below: • Salinas, Cry (2/7/17): A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SALINAS AFFIRMING ITS POSITION IN SUPPORT OF COMPREHENSIVE FEDERAL IMMIGRATION REFORM • Santa Ansi, CA (2/7/17): A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA CONDEMNING THE JANUARY 2017 PRESIDENTIAL EXECUTIVE ORDERS ON IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT AND REFUGEES • Santa Rosa, CA (2/7/17): RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ROSA TO SAFEGUARD THE CIVIL RIGHTS, SAFETY AND DIGNITY OF ALL SANTA ROSA RESIDENTS Thank you for your time and for your commitment to ensuring that San Luis Obispo is a safe place for all its residents, including immigrants from all countries, people of color, people of Muslim and Jewish faiths, LGBTQIA+ people, and people with disabilities. Best, Jane Lehr •
