Subject: Maintenance of Laguna Lake by dredging
Please continue the well thought out plan to restore and maintain Laguna Lake, prepared by City Staff and supported by
your predecessors on the council, by including funding for dredging in this year's budget.
Maintenance for the lake itself has been recognized as needed almost since the day of its modification to receive waters
from the creek and has been continually delayed. The lack of maintenance has reached a point where enjoyment and
many uses of this unique asset are being severely impeded. Like maintenance on our homes, putting off maintenance
can only create more problems and costs in the long run. The lake is something that we need to restore and maintain for
the inspiration of its beauty, opportunities it offers for education about our environment, and recreational enjoyment of
future generations.
The absolute minimum plan for dredging would be one that would regularly remove more sediments from the lake than
the average amount deposited, gradually reducing the sediment load to the optimum level for stability and continued
public enjoyment. This dredging, along with the planned stabilization of sediment sources, will ensure this interface with
nature in the boundaries of our city will be one of the jewels of our heritage.
Respectfully,
Don and Terry Green
