Subject: Allocate funding for Safe Routes to School for Pacheco and Bishop's Peak Elementary Schools
Mayor Harmon and City Council Members Christianson, Gomez, Pease and Rivoire:
I am writing to you as a resident of San Luis Obispo and a father of children who attend Pacheco Elementary
School (and, until recently, Bishop's Peak Elementary School as well).
Two years ago, at the Citywide budgeting meeting, I spoke to the council surrounded by children from Pacheco
and BP and asked for the Council to support making the streets safer for children who bike and walk to school.
Many families were grateful that the Council subsequently prioritized Safe Routes to School improvements and
funded a study of the bicycle/pedestrian crossing on Foothill Blvd. at Ferrini Road. This is a desperately needed
project that will directly impact all biking and walking families crossing Foothill to access Pacheco and BP.
Please follow through with the promises made to our children. Allocate funding for the the following
bike/walk projects:
1. Safe Routes to School for Pacheco and Bishop's Peak Elementary Schools
2. Bicycle/Pedestrian crossing on Foothill Boulvard at Ferrini Road
3. Broad Street Bicycle Boulevard
The studies for these projects have already been conducted, and our community eagerly anticipates the
completion of these projects. If the city is serious in its commitment that 20 percent of trips be made by bike,
completing these projects is imperative. For the lifelong benefit of future generations, our city's built
infrastructure (and not just its rhetoric) must support more healthful, convivial, and environmentally-sustainable
travel choices.
Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to make this city more walkable and bicycle-friendly,
especially for our children.
Sincerely,
Marty Rippens
