Subject: Major City Goals
Honorable Mayor and Council Members:
Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center is the second largest private employer in the city of San Luis Obispo. Our nearly 800
employees have a collective $72 million payroll and our hospital generated more than $1.3 million in taxes to the County
in 2016. With a more highly educated and technically trained work force, about 70 percent of our jobs generate head of
household wages.
This is why we remain concerned that about 80 percent of our employees are not residents of the City of San Luis
Obispo and the number one reason cited for voluntary terminations is lack of affordability of housing. The majority of
these terminations result in relocation out of the area, robbing San Luis Obispo of trained, intellectual capital.
We are very appreciative to see that our four Major City Goals for the 2017-19 budget cycle include housing, multi-
modal transportation and climate action (and also fiscal sustainability and responsibility) and applaud the City Council
for recognizing each goal's importance. In our estimation, housing is the key to solving all of the above priorities.
Increased affordable housing stock would address not only that goal but also have a significant impact on transportation
(people will not get out of their cars unless they live close to work and have a reliable mass transportation system
and/or safe bike routes) and the less commuters we have, the higher likelihood we will lessen the impact of greenhouse
gasses as we strive to be a "net -zero carbon city." Accomplishing more affordable housing will also lessen the impact on
our City's infrastructure and lead t9 --greater community and employment satisfaction.
Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center urges the City Council to move forward with these ambitious major city goals. Let's
not look back in two years and realize we haven't moved the needle. Our City's sustainable and fiscal future depends on
us collectively accomplishing these important goals.
Cordially,
Ron Yukelson
