As a matter of historical interest, I opposed (although I may not have said as much) the City's repeal and was not a signer of any petition for repeal. I want to state that, contrary to Carla's summary of the the initiative petition campaign, it did, as a matter of fact --at least when I was approached --emphasize the "non-discrimination" language and I was fully aware of that language when I was asked to sign the petition and declined. I declined because I supported the City's original mandatory ordinance. If there were problems with it, the problems could have been fixed with amendments. As a separate matter, because I believe citizen input is crucial to City policy formation, I believe the City's agenda should always avoid putting the most controversial item at the end of the meeting. Indeed, they should always be put at the beginning. The more symbolic actions, e.g., consensus items and proclamations should be put at the end of the agenda. Sincerely, Sharon G. Whitney We are all teachers and students for each other. I
