Subject:City Council budget request
Dear Mayor and City Council members,
I would like to urge you to please not raid the funds that were set aside for acquisition of land
for a neighborhood park for the Anholm/Cerro San Luis Foothills area of town. This has been
an unmet goal for many decades and its what this community is asking for. We are not asking
for the monies to be spent on plans, traffic measures, or other non-park-related planning
endeavors.
To be clear, we are not asking for a bike boulevard or so-called safe route to school. Our
family rides bikes...a lot. I ride with my 7 year old to Bishops Peak Elementary. If we were to
try use the entire width of the bike blvd on Cerro Romauldo (the whole traffic lane) pedaling
uphill, scarcely faster than a walking pace, I can tell you for certain that we would risk death or
serious injury by road rage or inattentiveness. We are currently sharing the road without
issue and without additional crosswalks, road closures or expensive consultants.
A park is a real need. We also have a 30 month old daughter. Since we live on South Tassajara
Drive, Throop park (connected to Pacheco School) is really the only walkable park from our
house. I was there yesterday with our 2 1/2 year old and we suddenly had to share the
playground with about 50 rambunctious and much larger kindergarteners. My daughter's toy
disappeared and it was no longer safe to use the play structures. A teacher apologized as we
were leaving.
I regret that I will not be able to provide comments in person at tomorrow's meeting. I'm sure
there are many park-loving families who, likewise will put family commitments before civic
ones. Thanks for carefully considering this and thanks in advance for not breaking this
promise. It will not go unnoticed!
