Using national metrics and data from the LUCE, the City of San Luis Obispo has about 3.3 acres of parks and recreational facilities, well short of the average of 9.9 acres for cities our size. The demands for more facilities can be seen from pickle ball players, residents wanting local parks, shortage of diamond and turf facilities, etc. at Parks and Recreation Commission meetings as well as City Council meetings. Whether at the City goal setting sessions or with individual development projects, the current system of rallying short-term support for a particular program or facility results in reactionary planning does not serve the overall community well. Having a new element where all of the interested groups and constituents can come and voice their needs and we, as a community can, as best as practicable, balance the needs, desires, projected growth in areas, ages and interests is what needs to happen now. Then we can coordinate development and acquisition over time to benefit the entire community. Both parks and recreation are strong components of building community and I applaud your vision and support to make this allocation to benefit the future of San Luis Obispo and its residents. Thank you for your time and your efforts to fund a new Parks and Recreation Element. Sincerely, Steve Davis 2606 Helena St. Former Parks and Recreation Commissioner Current Director - Youth Sports Association 1
