HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-05-2017 ARC Correspondence - Item 2 (Cooper)Existing Context Honorable Chair and Fellow Commissioners - I respectfully disagree with the following statement included in your Resolution No. ARC-17: “The project design maintains consistency with the City’s Community Design Guidelines by providing architectural interest and an attractive style which complements the character and scale of the existing neighborhood.” Please take note of the following excerpts from the Community Design Guidelines (with emphasis on the underlined statements). “Although it is not the intent of the design guidelines to require any particular architectural style in new construction, it is important that the design of proposed development consider the site surroundings, so that, where appropriate, the project will be compatible with and "fit" into an area with a clearly defined character that is valued by the community. Therefore, an understanding of the architectural styles found locally can be helpful in considering design alternatives. Consider the context. Review existing development near the site and consider how the project can be designed to fit in with the best examples of appropriate site design and architecture in the vicinity of the site. Coordinate the new with the old. When new construction is proposed on a site with existing structures that are to be retained, the new work should be designed to coordinate with old structures that have architectural and/or historic value.” Even though Gennaro’s Grill & Garden (450 Marsh Street) and 412 Marsh Street do not appear on the “Master List of Historic Resources” they are nevertheless excellent examples of Craftsman Bungalow. The architect should make every effort to consider the site surroundings and respond to the architectural value of these structures. Thank you! Allan Cooper, SLO
