SUBJECT: Agenda Item#16-Community Budget Task Force
An inquiry has been made of whether there are other options to engage the community about the
City's projected budgeted challenges. The work program for the Fiscal Sustainability and
Responsibility Major City Goal includes a task to establish a Community Budget Task Force.
The primary purpose of the Community Budget Task Force is to engage the community about the
farecasted financial issues and solicit ideas to address these challenges. Another outcome is to
help the community better understand the nature and root causes of these challenges. The task
force would also look at what other communities are doing as well as best practices being
employed throughout the state.
Other options to engage the community and achieve those goals include the following:
1. Create a speakers' bureau to present information to community, business and other
stakeholders as well as solicit ideas.
2. Establish a repository of information available to the public, including best practices and
approaches from other communities to address fiscal challenges.
3. Hold community meetings and/or workshops to engage the community about this issue
including the use of Open City Hall to gather feedback from those unable to participate in
person.
Staff will be prepared to discuss these options should Council want to explore any of these listed
alternatives or others generated during the agenda item.
