I’m writing to encourage you to approve San Luis Ranch. This is a well-planned and much needed project that falls in line
with major city goals.
I’m a business owner, young professional, and mother of two little girls. I’ve been lucky enough to buy a home in SLO, so
originally I was most excited about the Agriculture Heritage Center. However, as I hear more from my peers about the
need for affordable housing, I understand that this is the most important component for the future of our city.
Recently I have had the opportunity to speak with employees of some of the largest employers in our city – Minbody,
Sunrun, Rosetta, Etna Interactive, and Tektegrity. The majority of the employees who I connected with were between
28-38 years old. They are successful and working hard and love living in SLO, but they are frustrated with the inability to
buy here. Many are paying way too much in rent, and would prefer to buy, but just don’t have the option here.
This is forcing them to look at purchasing in other SLO County cities and adding to the already congested roads or forcing
them to move out of the area entirely. If we want to keep our best and brightest here to ensure our city continues to
grow, we need to find a way to provide affordable housing. As you look at this project, please also consider how other
fees and impacts will affect the home price to our citizens. Also, please see what you can do to ensure these homes stay
for people who work in SLO for years to come.
Best,
Jamie Magon
