I've lived and worked in SLO County for 7 years now (living in rental housing the whole time). I met my husband here. We started a family here. My husband works in SLO and many of my clients are based in SLO, but we cannot afford to buy a home in the city of SLO. In fact, most working families cannot. There is a housing shortage for the workforce in SLO and this creates a ripple effect throughout the entire county, creating affordability issues throughout the surrounding areas. I understand that you have received many comments in opposition to new housing projects in SLO. I can understand that some residents fear change and want to keep open space in the city. Open space is very important. However, affordable housing for your workforce is incredibly important too. And developments, like San Luis Ranch, that are striving for affordability and to thoughtfully consider keeping working ag lands near town are the kind of projects we should be encouraging in SLO. I also am pleased to see that they will preferentially sell to people working in the city, not to people in search of investment property. Of course, it is up to you to ensure that developers deliver on their promises and that the final project is in fact affordable. I encourage the Planning Commission and the City Council to continue to think of ways to help facilitate smart, mixed-use, denser development that encourages developers to take on affordable housing projects and create multiple housing options for residents. Thank you for your consideration. While working families don't always have the flexibility to attend public meetings to give verbal public comment, we do care and we do want to see positive change on the housing front.
