We are losing great young professionals and families, not only to neighboring cities, but to other parts of the country. If we want our business to continue to thrive, they need access to wonderful employees, who need to be able to afford homes. The diverse range of affordable and workforce housing can begin to put a dent in the supply we so desperately need! I myself have lived and worked in SLO for the past six years. However, even making more than twice, and now three times, the minimum wage, it isn't enough to afford to live in the area and save enough for a home in town. When rent prices on a single bedroom apartment that isn't falling apart are hitting close to $1100+ a month, something needs to change. Especially when the majority of landlords will simply shrug and comment that maybe you should get a roommate to make the place more affordable, all while charging more for said roommate. I even had one potential landlord tell me if a studio was too much, that I should get a roommate or two to share with! I'm 25 years old and work as a supervisor for IT services. I do not want a roommate when I'm trying to build a life in SLO and maintain early hours. It's just not feasible with the majority of individuals looking for housing in town. I simply cannot live with a college student, or someone older that works odd hours. The ability to own a home in SLO would greatly improve my quality of life and allow me to feel more established and part of the community. I would like to continue to live and thrive here, but, unfortunately, the sad reality is that without more housing developments like San Luis Ranch, I will not be able to do so. That is why I am in support of this project. Thank you! Corbin Weigel 1
