As I drove south on the 101, I noticed the northbound traffic was slow and bumper to bumper as it often is with the many commuters coming into SLO. When I started in business here in SLO 30 years ago, there were 13,000 commuters at that time. Now there are over 30,000, many of whom would choose to live in SLO if they could. Many of these people are clients of mine who can get financing but need a suitable house to buy and can’t find one. Every gallon of fuel used in commuting puts 19 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere along with other greenhouse gases. That’s millions of pounds of greenhouse gases every year added to an already huge problem. We have the opportunity to do something about it. The San Luis Ranch development directly addresses the need for workforce housing in San Luis Obispo. This project and others like it are needed to address our jobs/housing imbalance. Let’s build sustainable housing in SLO for the people who want to live and work here. Let’s get that housing into the hands of the workforce and do what we can to keep it there. And let’s cut down on the crazy impacts of commuting in any way we can. My daughter is a 27 year-old college grad with a good job locally. She is one of the young people you hear about considering moving out of the area because of the high cost of housing. It is our responsibility to make room for her generation and the ones after in the most sustainable way we can. We have learned a lot about how to do that. Let’s be sure we do. I urge you approve the San Luis Ranch project. Thank you, Kevin Hauber 1
