HomeMy WebLinkAbout8/15/2017 Item 16, Englert Christian, Kevin From:Jesse Englert <jenglert@gmail.com> Sent:Saturday, August To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Broad Street Bike Blvd Project Mayor Harmon and City Council, I respectfully urge the council the adopt Alternative 2 for the proposed Broad Street Bike Blvd project at the Aug 15 meeting. - It's the preferred option from the community survey - It's the preferred option of the Bicycle Advisory Committee - It provides the best LOS for bicyclists as noted in the screening report: "The two-way protected bikeway proposed for Chorro Street would improve the bicycle levels of service from LOS D to LOS A between Meinecke and Lincoln." I'm an avid bicycle commuter and homeowner in the Anholm neighborhood. For this project I have attended all 3 community meetings and the Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting. In my assessment Alternative 2 will provide the safest infrastructure for encouraging more ridership of both experienced and new bicyclists alike. There will be a lot of push back from residents in neighboring side streets citing negative impacts to "their" street based on arguments such as having a lot of children. As a homeowner on Chorro with two young children (a 2 year old and a 2 week old) I can say that there are just as many if not more young families with young children living on Chorro and Broad and thus believe the "quite street with child argument" is unwarranted. There will also be push back from residents citing the minor inconvenience of having to drive an extra block to access their residence. These negative impacts affect my family as well and I am more that willing to accept some minor inconvenience in order to promote the city's mulit-modal goal of 20% bicycle trips. In the face of opposition from NIMBY attitude in my neighborhood I urge the council to stay strong and make the difficult decision that will be the best for the entire community. Respectfully, Jesse Englert 111 Chorro St 1
