Subject:August 15 meeting Items 15 and 17: Broad Street Chorro Street safe bike corridor
Dear Mayor Harmon and City Council Members
On August 15, you will be asked to consider plans for a Broad Street Bike Blvd and other Safe Routes to
Schools Plan improvements proposed for the Bishops Peak/Pacheco Elementary School area of town
with Items 15 and 17.
Connectivity is vital to a safe biking corridor for those interested and dedicated to utilizing alternate modes of
daily transportation to and from work/school. The city of San Luis Obispo is getting closer and closer to the
kind of continuum that will make for such a safe corridor. The railroad safety trail and bike boulevard to
downtown are fantastic segments for bike commuters. A vital piece to a safe corridor through town is the
Broad/Chorro Street connection between downtown and the Foothill area. We bike commuted with our
children from the Johnson/Laurel Lane area to Pacheco and Bishop Peak schools for years, and
the Broad/Chorro segment was the most frightening part of our trip especially crossing Foothill at
Ferrini. Making this piece safer will not only facilitate safe transport to the aforementioned elementary
schools but it would also facilitate and encourage biking to Cal Poly for a significant number of students, staff
and faculty.
