Safe route to school plan is "jumping the gun" unless the City is
prepared to commit to utilizing eminent domain to obtain property
from the LDS Church. City staff has previously advised the Council
that talks have been going on for over a year without success,
resident testimony indicated the Church doesn't want to sell off the
strip indicated in the proposed plan. Without this critical piece the
plan to re-route from Broad to Ramona, riders will likely cut through
the loading zone behind the shopping center, or try to cut across
church property to Foothill.
The HAWK addition to Foothill will result in more car cut-through
traffic on Ramona to Broad, especially if combined with Broad
becoming one way to the southbound freeway on ramp.
My children attended both Bishop Peak and what is now Pacheco
with no issues of crossing Foothill, nor have I heard of any problems.
The majority of issues with Pacheco revolve around the dropping
off/picking up of students and the route the school buses take; the
City needs to work with the School District and Police Department to
remedy the problem. Wait until the Broad bike blvd is resolved to
access the safe route and ensure the availability of the proposed
path.
