Subject:Broad Street Bike Boulevard
I have two concerns related to the proposals for the Broad Street Bike Boulevard as it relates to Chorro Street.
1 - Installation of “road bumps” on Chorro Street These bumps have various names and are similar to the ones that
Chorro Street had in the 1990s and removed later. They do little to calm the speeding on the road and are more of a
nuisance that anything else. In reality, some of the speeders find the bumps fun to either “jump over” with their car or
swerve around - both actions make the “road bumps” more dangerous. In addition, research shows that these “bumps”
are of little assistance in reducing speed. It doesn’t make sense to make the same mistake twice.
PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL THESE “BUMPS" ON THE ROAD.
2 - Car parking lane between car and bicycle lanes
Placing a car parking lane with a car driving lane on one side and a bike lane on the other side doesn’t make any sense to
me at all. My contention is that once anyone exits a parked car they become a pedestrian. Why put these pedestrians
at risk. Those exiting their car on the driver’s side have to contend with cars going by them. When I was getting out of
my car (drivers side) I had my door smashed by an individual driving into the lane where my cars was designated to park
because she was driving into the parked car lane. I only evaded being hit myself because I saw her coming and was able
to get out of the way. I accept this issue since I as a driver can be aware of the issue and others in my car (e.g., children,
elderly, etc.) can get out safely on the passenger’s side. I can also remove any packages and groceries from the
passenger side without being concerned about dodging cars or bikes.
But what about those exiting on the passengers side (including children) if there is a biking lane between them and the
curb. Bikes can be dangerous, evenly deadly, especially to the elderly who can’t move quickly or to children. Add
packages, backpacks, and groceries to those individuals and it makes it even more dangerous. Are you trying to protect
bikes over pedestrians by having them ride between parked cars and the curb?
PLEASE MOVE ALL PARKED CAR LANES NEXT TO THE CURB.
Thank you for the opportunity to express my concerns.
