SUPERINTENDENT S:\SUPTOFFICE\SUPERINT\Admin\BCA\Correspondence\Avila Ranch Tranportation 09-12-17.docx September 19, 2017 Honorable Heidi Harmon, Mayor of San Luis Obispo and Members of the San Luis Obispo City Council 990 Palm Street San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 Dear Mayor Harmon and Council Members: This correspondence is offered to the City of San Luis Obispo to clarify San Luis Coastal Unified School District policy regarding district boundaries as it pertains to the proposed Avila Ranch project community. Allocating resources for determining district boundaries is a primary responsibility of the district’s board of trustees and administration. In determining district boundaries, the board and administrators must follow California law and make decisions that responsibly allocate resources reflecting the educational priorities for our schools and safety related to transportation for students. The district has thoroughly examined the possible demographic impacts of the Avila Ranch community and reviewed possible school assignment including safe routes to and from both Los Ranchos Elementary School and C.L. Smith Elementary School. At this time, this community development is best served in the Los Ranchos School attendance area. District bus transportation will be made available at regular parent-pay rates to and from Los Ranchos for those students living in the Avila Ranch community,m and financial assistance is available to qualified families. Parents may choose to provide their own transportation. Please do not hesitate to contact the school district if you require further clarification. Sincerely, ERIC PRATER, Ed.D. Superintendent EP/mkh
