Subject:Avila Ranch Support
Dear City Council,
Thank you for taking the time to read my support letter for the proposed Avila Ranch community. I
moved to San Luis Obispo in 2013 with my partner, Scott, to attend graduate school at Cal Poly. After
growing up in California, living in Mongolia for 2 years with the Peace Corps, and subsequently in LA,
SLO has become our home. We work in our community, where I provide academic advising to
engineering students at Cal Poly and Scott is an educator at Grizzly Youth Academy. We enjoy
mornings at Linnaea's Cafe downtown, borrowing books from the library on a regular basis, and
attending the events year-round at Mission Plaza, especially introducing our baby to the Concerts in
the Plaza this summer and the parade this Christmas! In 2015, we were able to buy a townhome in
the Moylan Terrace community, something that we originally didn't think was possible in the current
housing market in SLO. Home-ownership became a dream-come-true because this project allocated
homes for owner-occupied, workforce housing. When I recently found out about the Avila Ranch
development, I hoped that someday my growing family could have more space: our own backyard, a
larger neighborhood to ride bikes and have room to play, and increased living space as well. What's
more, this would give us the opportunity to sell our own home to another young family looking for
their own "starter home." I urge you to consider families like ours in your decision; our jobs are vital
to this community and we deserve to live in the community that we support. The Avila Ranch housing
project is essential to families like mine, so we don't struggle to find housing for our families among
the few resources available in SLO. Thank you again for your consideration.
Cheers,
Ashlee Burt
