However, I feel so very strongly about this, I wanted to be sure and write to let you know my thoughts on the matter. I have been a resident of San Luis Obispo for the last 15+ years. Only in the last few have I noticed the increase in traffic with seemingly nowhere to go. A few years back it was on LOVR due to the shopping centers that were put in, but that was greatly improved with the widening of the bridge. Now the backup is on the freeways, South Higuera to LOVR, and over by the campus, to name a few... and there are no solutions being worked on for these issues. Not only that, but there is talk of multiple new housing developments, adding hundreds and hundreds of new homes! How do we plan to handle the extra cars and people? We can't keep adding more without taking these issues into consideration. Cal Poly continues to add more students, adding to our overall population, and making us even more overcrowded. There aren't new roads and we don't have a lot of places to expand. We claim to be environmentally conscious but idling cars are certainly not improving the environment. You can try to make the area more bike friendly but we all know that most people are not going to ride all the time. It saddens me to see my small town getting bigger and bigger. Of course growth is inevitable, but in the past it was regulated and smarter options were chosen. Now it just seems like everything is being approved, and our infrastructure can't handle it. It's not like we can scale back once we decide to add on. It's only going to get bigger and bigger from here on out. People love San Luis Obispo because it is a charming SMALL town. If we're not careful, we're going to lose that distinction. Please consider these issues and do not approve the Avila Ranch, or any other major new developments, at this time. Thank you for reading. - Laura Schuberg 1
