Concerns re: San Luis Mtn. possibility of fire Item #10 PLEASE PLACE WITH AGENDA CORRESPONDENCE ITEM # 10. Thank you. Hello Chief Olson, Mayor and City Council, The dry grass on the Wildlife Corridor going uphill to San Luis Mountain has only been partially cut , adjacent to the driveway for 159 Broad St. The fire threat in California is frightening this year. I would appreciate it if you would take a drive up the driveway and check out the grass behind the homes on the uphill side of Mission Lane. I know that John, the owner of University Square Barber Shop, oversees the cutting of the grass and management of the former Serrano/Bressi property. It, as I'm sure you know, is mostly owned by the Archdiocese of Monterey and other Catholic organizations. John would surely know who the responsible parties are. Don't they have a responsibility to cut the tall, thick, dead grass? Think about our neighborhoods around the mountain, and increasing density, AND strong winds that blow from Los Osos Valley Road, up Foothill and through the residential areas surrounding the mountain (like the other night) when you read this. Mission Lane is very narrow, although it's 50 ft. wide on maps, with only one access in/out which is yet another unsettling factor in case of fire. As you may know, the mountain bikers/hikers want to have extended night hours on San Luis Mountain. As it presently stands the hours for use are from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. It's going before the City Council on Oct. 17, 2017 at 6 p.m. It's Item # 10. Years ago we had an ongoing problem with fires being built on San Luis Mountain at night. I hope that you will weigh in on the safety matter of extending the night use for recreation since, as you know, that will increase the chances of fires, and, of course rescues as on Bishop Peak. Last year's Rock Creek Fire was started by a mountain biker's metal pedal striking a rock, see the second link below to read about it. Thank you for your time; I look forward to your response. Meanwhile, I'm hoping for rain! C.C. McLean Mission Ln. SLO 1 FYI: Here's an interesting fire article from the L.A.
