Secondly, I have real concern regarding the negative impacts to wildlife. I'm far from being an environmentalist, on a good day a would consider myself an OK conservationist. There is no truly compelling reason to allow human activities in the City's Open Space areas after dusk. I understand people have to work- typically 8-5 PM, and in the Winter months it gets dark early making it difficult to hike or mountain bike during those months but that isn't a compelling enough reason to impact wildlife who didn't ask for a trail network to be created in their environment. Despite the Bible's opinion, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping animal that creepeth upon the earth." we as humans should show more compassion to those creatures that we have "dominion" over. Lastly, I hope the Council considers the impacts to those who live near or adjacent to City Open Space areas. Would you want people in your backyard wandering around or riding their mountain bikes at all hours of the night? Because that is basically what you are going to create. Oh, and by the way mountain bikes aren't all that quiet as riders descend. I know that for a fact because I'm an avid mountain bike rider myself and I can tell you there is all kinds of noise from the chain, rocks kicking off the frame, tires biting into the dirt, brakes, etc. It's not a quiet sport. And I've included a picture of the bike I ride- from the top of Ocean View trail . For the techies it's a Santa Cruz Bronson CC with Shimano XTR, Pike fork, Cane Creek DB rear shock, Next Carbon crank arms, RaceFace carbon handlebars. Just in case you question my bona fides.
