What is the problem here? There is a large and beautiful tree growing across Luneta, and the tree should remain there until it dies of a natural death. However there is no reason at all to keep the street closed once the tree has died. Unless my memory fails me, Michael Codron stated last year that there are only about 300 daily car trips in Luneta. This is almost ten times less than Ferrini (also a residential street) and a great deal less than many other streets in the city, especially Ramona which inherits all the traffic from Luneta. There is also no parking crisis in Luneta, as there is in many other streets around Foothill, and the City has always viewed Luneta as a regular street, not a cul-de-sac. So, why are we even talking about this? The argument I have heard to keep Luneta closed is the following: if you open Luneta, it will be used as a shortcut by people coming from West Foothill and going to Broad. All you need to do is look at a map to see that this is nonsense. Going to Luneta to join Broad would mean making a loop from La Entrada at 25 miles an hour, while on the other hand, you can go straight on Foothill at 40 miles an hour to reach Broad. Luneta is a long slow loop, not a shortcut. 1 The Luneta residents have enjoyed privileged conditions for a long time, and they are now upset at the idea of losing these privileges. I don't blame them, but I don't agree with them. We are not Montecito or Beverly Hill, and we expect our City Council to treat everyone equally. Granting special privileges to a group of residents while denying it to the rest of the city is a dangerous path to take. I suggest that you keep Luneta closed as long as the tree is alive, and make it clear that you will open it when the tree dies. It is a solution that should ease the concerns of the present Luneta residents without frustrating the rest of us, who have been dealing with REAL traffic and parking problems for years, and with no sign of relief.
