Subject:Please Keep Luneta Closed To Through Traffic
Dear City Council Members,
I reside near the intersection of Luneta and Palomar Ave.
I understand the General Plan from more than 40 years ago was for Luneta to be open to through traffic, but that
was 40 years ago!
The Palomar--Luneta area already experiences increased traffic due to the nearby Valencia Apartments. Traffic
going south on Palomar goes up an incline and curves east before meeting Luneta. This creates a dangerous
blind spot, in both directions, where Luneta intersects Palomar. Currently this lower part of Luneta is a common
and safe path used by seniors, families with pets, students, and bicyclists on a daily basis--so the addition of car
traffic on lower Luneta would eliminate this valued space, and would also create a hazardous situation.
The resulting increased traffic in the immediate area due to the opening of Luneta is not only detrimental to the
peacefulness and safety of our residential environment, but would also increase traffic and pollution from those
vehicles entering and leaving the area by way of Serrano--of which a portion functions as only one lane.
There appears to be no benefit to the opening of Luneta to through traffic, but the ways in which this would
negatively impact our neighborhood are numerous. The local residents worked with City Staff for over a year to
develop a plan that worked for everyone, so what is the purpose of now dismissing that work?
Thank you for your consideration of our concerns, and our request to keep Luneta closed to through traffic,
Jody Vollmer
