Such a move will definitely increase the volume and speed of traffic many times over and destroy the character, feel, and quality of our neighborhood. It is essential to keep Luneta closed to through traffic for a myriad of reasons. 1. Luneta is a popular bike and pedestrian route. On any given day and evening, there are many people walking, running, riding bikes, and walking their dogs. Because there are no parks, walkways or paths, or other quiet streets anywhere around the neighborhood, Luneta is the only place to do these activities safely. Many children, including my own, walk, ride bikes, and play near the street. All these people's safety is jeopardized. 2. As a city, we are making moves to become more bike friendly, find safe walks to school, and encourage alternative transportation. Opening Luneta takes an existing bike and pedestrian route and turns it into a vehicle route. Such a move is counterproductive as it actually promotes more vehicle traffic and make it less attractive and more dangerous to walk, bike, or use alternative transportation. If as a city we're trying to move away from using cars and move towards alternative transportation, why would we want to open another vehicle route? 3. A year ago, residents of the larger Luneta neighborhood turned out for a meeting to show their support for keeping Luneta closed. A majority of residents on the surrounding streets do not want to open Luneta to through traffic either. Local residents have worked with city staff for over a year to create a plan that everyone is happy with. Please do not go against the wishes of your constituents and change your mind that this is a good idea. It is not. I would like to reiterate that I and my children are very strongly opposed to Luneta being opened to through traffic. Please support the local residents, staff recommendations, and the goals for improved neighborhoods to keep Luneta closed to through traffic as it has been for decades. Thank you. Alison Preston 1
