Subject:Items #9 and #10 - Feedback and Support 10/24/17
October 24, 2017
Mayor Harmon and City Council Members
990 Palm Street
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
Please approve both Items #9 and #10 on tonight’s agenda.
9. PUBLIC HEARING - ORDINANCE INTRODUCTION - REVIEW OF BEVERAGE STRAWS UPON
REQUEST (JOHNSON/CARLONI – 30 MINUTES) Recommendation: Introduce an Ordinance
entitled “An Ordinance of the City Council of the City of San Luis Obispo, California, adding Chapter
8.09 to the San Luis Obispo Municipal Code regulating single-use beverage straws.”
10. PUBLIC HEARING - ORDINANCE INTRODUCTION - REGULATING THE SALE AND
DISTRIBUTION OF SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BOTTLES AND ESTABLISHING REGULATIONS TO
INCREASE AVAILABILITY OF WATER BOTTLE FILLING STATIONS (JOHNSON/CARLONI – 30
MINUTES) Recommendation: Introduce an Ordinance entitled “An Ordinance of the City Council of
the City of San Luis Obispo, California, adding Chapter 8.07 to the San Luis Obispo Municipal Code
regulating single-use plastic beverage bottles on city property less than 21 ounces in size,” and
establishing regulations to increase the availability of water bottle filling stations in the City.
Plastic pollution, whether it be straws or single-use beverage bottles, damages the environment.
The only caveat in Item #10 may be that the plastic use beverage bottles size may need to be
reduced to “15 ounces or less.”
As a public school teacher, I can attest to the fact that some families promote the consumption of
water and healthy alternatives to water that come in a container of 20 fluid ounces or less.
I support the availability of water-filling stations in our City, in our public parks, at our sports fields, at
the base of major trailheads if at all possible, and on our school campuses.
The majority of San Luis Obispo residents value personal health and preserving the environment. The
more you can promote personal health and a clean, unpolluted environment through your votes, the
better.
Sincerely,
1
