Where rather than receiving energy from PG&E, residents and businesses will be covered under a locally owned and locally controlled renewable energy program, at a cost that is equivalent or less than standard rates. Diablo Canyon Nuke Plant has been a dangerous albatross, hanging over our communities for far too long. The sooner it is gone, the better. The waste piling up will be a huge burden to bear. Community Choice is a much better alternative. Too bad we didn’t do that first, instead of the deadly, destructive nuke plant. Here are more reasons DCNPP needs to be shut down NOW!!!! Diablo Canyon nuclear plant can retire before the planned years 2024/2025 for the following reasons: 1. ALJ Allen, PG&E, and the Joint Parties all agree that the closure of Diablo Canyon will not have adverse impacts on system reliability. 2. Replacement energy will certainly be available by 2020. Even today, when weather conditions favorable to wind and solar generation occur, California has more electrical energy than the grid can manage. Since it is unsafe to suddenly ramp down the output from the nuclear plant, California must pay neighboring states to take excess energy from California. 3. Given that Diablo generates 500 pounds of radioactive waste each day it operates, fewer years of continued operation will result in fewer additional tons of wastes that will have to be stored on site for decades. 4. Because many aging components are still in place at the plant, and because it is located in a seismically active area, ratepayers are subjected to both financial and environmental risks. These risks would be significantly reduced if Diablo were shut down by 2020, rather than waiting until 2024/2025. 5. The once-through cooling system at Diablo Canyon, sited less than a mile from a Marine Protected Area, draws 2.5 billion gallons of water through the plant every day and is responsible for killing over 1.5 billion fish larvae every year. In the words of the California Coastal Commission to the State Water Resources Control Board, Diablo Canyon is California's largest marine predator. Please support and promote the Community Choice option. We will be healthier, safer and helping our communities, as well as the environment at the same time. We can protect all of the creatures in the ocean from DCNPP destruction too. 1 Thanks for your time and consideration.
