HomeMy WebLinkAboutBrooks (Street Vitality?) 3/22/2018 City of San Luis Obispo Planning Commission Advisory Board Kelle Brooks 780 Meinecke Ave. San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 March 22, 2018 To whom it may concern, I am writing in regards to the need for increasing street vitality and livable cities, specifically in reference to the recent development at the corner of Chorro and Foothill. One of the fundamental principles of vital urban street design is having commercial or public activities at the street level. This engages pedestrians am a proponent of increasing density in the city, especially combining housing, commercial and public uses. I was surprised to find out the new development at Chorro and Foothill will have private residential spaces at the ground floor. Because this is a major pedestrian and commercial corridor, it is imperative that new development takes the opportunity to add more street life vitality. Much of the existing commercial space in this area unfortunately has parking in front which inhibits pedestrian activity. With new development, we should be encouraging increased street vitality and livable cities, not reverting to the poor practices of the automobile focused planning of the past. Has this been considered and if not, would it be possible to discuss this at the next planning commission meeting?
