Subject:Zoning Updates
To the members of the Planning Commission,
As the city proceeds in updating its zoning regulations, I hope that the Planning Commission will take the
recommendations of the SLO Chamber’s Zoning Task Force to heart. These thoughtful recommendations are
well aligned to the the city’s adopted Land Use and Circulation Element (LUCE) and will help bring clarity to
the city’s zoning code. We all support the LUCE, we just need to get it implemented. The Chamber’s
recommendations are geared toward helping the city make the goals of the LUCE a reality over the next
couple of decades.
I am particularly concerned about housing provisions. We all know that the city needs more affordable housing.
As a father of two teen boys, I would like to believe that San Luis Obispo is a place where young professionals
can afford to live and raise their own families, if they so choose. Wise zoning use could help create the kind of
residential options that will help the city to grow smartly and increase its vibrancy.
To that end, I hope the Planning Commission will consider strategic rezoning in areas that can absorb more
density, including the southwest part of town. I further encourage the Commission to focus on building in and
up by utilizing the existing height regulations to increase residential units. Nudging developers to provide a
minimum amount of small units (600 square feet or less) will also help make the city more affordable,
especially for young job seekers.
Finally, I’d like to thank you for the work you do! Accommodating so many competing goals in real time when
the city faces so many significant challenges is no easy task. I appreciate you taking on these challenges on
and for soliciting public input.
Thank you,
Dan Troy
