I first moved to San Luis Obispo in 1986, when I was six years old. I lived in the Laguna area, not far from where the San Luis Ranch is planned to be developed. At the age of 11, my parents moved us back to MN and every winter I would remind them that when we lived in SLO I had the perfect life in the perfect location and some day I would go back. In 2007 I did return to SLO and now I own a CPA firm that employees a number of residents throughout the county. Times have certainly changed in SLO however. Home ownership for working class people has become harder and harder to achieve. What may be even more concerning is that even rents have skyrocketed due to an increase in demand. It’s obvious that the market in this town is really driven by college rentals. I am all for a free market and I appreciate what the college brings to us in way of economic benefits, but the reality is that the community requires a workforce to serve those students and unfortunately, the cost of living is becoming so out of control that only investors and the most well off people are able to purchase homes. Who is going to serve them if the rest of us decide to leave? At some point the cost will become unsustainable and people will leave in droves. I know this, because even for someone like me who fought hard to leave the frozen tundra of Minnesota (), I’ve had my second thoughts about living in such a high cost area. Everything has it’s price eventually. Thanks for your time! Respectfully, Cole Stevens, CPA 694 Santa Rosa St San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 (Ph) 805-543-6876 x 12 (Fax) 805-781-2526 www.burkartcpa.com Confidentiality Notice: This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are strictly private and confidential to Burkart & Stevens and are intended solely for the use of the addressee(s).
