Subject:Workforce housing
Dear Planning Commissioners,
I’m writing in support of the development of affordable workforce housing in San Luis Obispo. The condition and
affordability of rental homes in the area are unacceptable for most families I know, myself included. Far too many
absentee landlords and/or management companies have done the very minimum required to upkeep their homes
knowing the market is tight and that they can simply rent to CalPoly students. Moreover when these homes go on the
market they are in desperate need of expensive updates and repairs to make them a living space that working families
require to raise their children.
I submit that not only should affordable housing be built but that deed restrictions be placed on those homes so that
speculators can not buy them up to flip at higher market values and investors can’t buy them to rent at exorbitant
prices.
Let’s invest in our community by providing housing for those who live and work in the area, and invest their time and
hard-earned money in locally.
Respectfully,
Christopher Barnickel
