Subject:Anholm Bikeway Plan - In Favor
Dear Planning Commissioners,
I'm supportive of the City's efforts to improve bicycle safety and to provide infrastructure for safe bikeways to schools.
As we saw with the recycling movement in the 80s, setting behavior at a young age is instrumental in creating large-
scale social change. Increasing bicycle transportation is an important factor in reducing carbon emissions, and thereby
an important step in slowing human caused climate change.
My first choice for the Anholm Bikeway is to have protected bikeways with the creation of one-way couplets. I am in
favor of reducing parking, or maybe it is more appropriate to reduce to one travel lane in each direction and keep
parking on both sides of the street. I hope that we eventually move in this direction.
In the interim, I am in favor of the diversion on Broad Street although this will impact my family directly. We drive, walk,
and bike on Broad Street regularly, especially to access the shopping Center at Ramona & Broad. My mother-in-law lives
on Murray Street between Chorro and Santa Rosa, and this change will also alter her access to the shopping center by
car. With this revision she will now have to drive to Foothill and wait at 2 busy traffic lights to get to a store that's only 3
blocks from her house. If the diversion could still allow access from Meinecke to Broad in the northbound direction, I'd
see that as a diversion that still reduces traffic on Broad below Meinecke, but doesn't send the residents of the blocks
surround the shopping area out to Foothill unnecessarily. However, as this is a temporary measure designed to test
an idea, I am supportive of the experiment.
