Subject:Anhom Bikeway Proposals - 8-14-18 Planning Commission
Dear Chair Fowler and Commissioners:
RE: Anholm Bikeway Proposals
In lieu of me speaking at you for three minutes this evening, could you assign that time to that which is requested by the
Anholm Neighbors United?
I would like to comment that you are again being victimized by staff - who are bringing an unvetted proposal to you for
approval, without an interactive discussion within the affected neighborhood. With the amount of time and money
already and potentially invested in it, this project should have a community workshop by staff, a report back to the
community with some more interaction such as a survey, and some resulting analysis and recommendations before it is
scheduled for any public hearing. As usual, staff is considering special pressure groups, that is, a group to which I
belong, Bike SLO, as "customers" against residents of an affected area as interlopers.
It really would become you to ignore your sensitivity to "serving at the pleasure of the City Council,," and direct staff to
follow common planning practice, interact with those affected and return with a product of those discussions. In other
words, I'm asking that you continue this item with direction to staff to as much as I've suggested and more to heal the
tension with the city, which now sets interests against residents, so that a fair hearing can be held of all sides.
If you as usual do not want to postpone this and be faulted for delaying it, I ask that you adopt the proposals by Anhom
Neighbors United and direct staff to revise the project to replace earlier concepts with these. Thank you.
Sincerely,
James Lopes
