Brown Governor, State of California State Capitol, First Floor Sacramento, CA 95814 VIA Email: Leg.Unit@gov.ca.gov RE: SB 212 (Jackson) Pharmaceutical and Sharps Waste Stewardship Program Request for SIGNATURE Dear Governor Brown, The City of San Luis Obispo urges support for SB 212 (Jackson), which would create a statewide take- back system for sharps and pharmaceutical waste. The City of San Luis Obispo currently benefits from local takeback programs for sharps and pharmaceutical waste. The utilization of this program provides safe, free, and convenient disposal options to our community. The adoption of a statewide collection program will ensure consistency between our community and others across the State while allowing for a seamless transition as Californians travel or move from one community to another. Adoption of SB 212 (Jackson) is a priority for the City of San Luis Obispo in order to alleviate the costs for handling these products at solid waste facilities or when these items have been disposed improperly. Additionally, takeback programs help protect those involved with the collection and disposal of solid waste by reducing the number of sharps in the solid waste stream. As the operator of a water utility, the City of San Luis Obispo also supports initiatives related to the proper disposal of pharmaceuticals due to their potential impact on water supplies and their relation to constituents of emerging concern (CECs). We believe pharmaceutical and sharps waste should be subject to a producer-responsible recycling program due to difficulty and risks in managing these products. SB 212 takes an important step in managing waste in California by requiring pharmaceutical and sharps producers to address end-of-life issues for their products. For the reasons above, the City of San Luis Obispo urges your signature on SB 212 (Jackson). Sincerely, Heidi Harmon Mayor City of San Luis Obispo cc.
