Subject: Please Act to Preserve Funding for Bicycling and Walking
Dear Representative Capps:
On behalf of the City of San Luis Obispo I ask for your help to preserve funding for
bicycling and walking in the American Energy and Infrastructure Act. Please vote for the Petri
amendment during the transportation markup to restore and preserve funding for bicycling and
walking.
This bill is expected to eliminate the two largest programs that fund bicycling and
walking infrastructure —Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School. Without these
programs, communities in our district and all over the country will lose access to resources to
build the facilities that keep people safe. This bill may increase flexibility to state DOT'S, but it
will come at the expense of local governments and schools. Transportation Enhancements and
Safe Routes to School are some of the few programs that reach down to the community level,
and give local governments certainty that there will be funds available for projects important to
their districts.
Bicycling and walking are critical to keeping our communities moving with healthy, safe,
and accessible transportation options. Please talk with your colleagues on the Transportation
Committee to ask them to vote in favor of the Petri amendment to restore funding for bicycling
and walking during this week's markup. Additionally, when this bill comes to the floor, please
vote in favor of any amendment to preserve funding for bicycling and walking in the
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Thank you for standing up on this important issue.
Sincerely,
(?Jan Marx
