RE: AB 61 (Gatto) Parking: Parking Meters
NOTICE OF OPPOSITION
Dear Assembly Member Achadjian:
The City of San Luis Obispo opposes AB 61, which would allow citizens to park for free
at broken or malfunctioning parking meters for the maximum time allowed by the
meter. Additionally, AB 61 would prohibit local governments from enacting an ordinance or
resolution that would ban parking in a space controlled by a broken on -street parking meter. This
bill takes away local control.
There is also concern that this legislation would promote vandalism as a way to park for
free. With the City of San Luis Obispo being a college town, word could spread via social media
and the internet as a way to avoid paying for parking. Vandalism repairs would cost the City
time and materials, and cause lost revenues.
For the stated reasons, the City of San Luis Obispo opposes AB 61.
Sincerely,
Kathy Sth
