The goals of the City of San Luis Obispo Promotional Coordinating Committee are to (1) improve the quality of
life available to all residents of and visitors to San Luis Obispo and (2) promote, in a manner consistent with
long-range community goals, the development of San Luis Obispo as a regional and tourist center.

PUBLIC COMMENT: Each speaker is limited to three minutes of public comment. At this time, you may
address the Committee on items that are not on the agenda but are of interest to the public and within the subject
matter jurisdiction of the Promotional Coordinating Committee. The Committee may not discuss or take action
on issues that are not on the agenda other than to briefly respond to statements made or questions raised, or ask
staff to follow up on such issues.

Representatives from the SLO Chamber will present the report for the public relations activities that
occurred over the month.

1. 2019-21 COUNCIL GOAL SETTING 20 mins
In preparation for the 2019-21 Financial Plan Goal Setting process, the PCC will continue the discussion
and finalize goals for Council to consider.
2. STRATEGIC PLAN WORK 30 mins
The Committee will review the proposals presented at the September meeting, discuss any adjustments to
the ranking and begin outlining next steps.

CALL TO ORDER
A Regular Meeting of the San Luis Obispo Promotional Coordinating Committee was called to
order on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Hearing Room, located at 990
Palm Street, San Luis Obispo, California, by Chair Dixon.

Representatives from the SLO Chamber of Commerce presented the past quarter report for

Brittany Garcia, Matchfire Account Director, reported on the transition from the
SLOHappenings App, to the SLO Happenings Social Channels and website conduits.

revelations related to the startup were presented.

BUSINESS ITEMS
1. 2019-21 Council Goal Setting
Tourism Manager Cano reviewed the goal setting parameters, the PCC 2017-19 community
goals as presented to Council, and the 2017-19 City of San Luis Obispo Major City Goals.
The Committee discussed the following themes for their draft goals:
• Quality of Life and Public Art
• Bike friendly / Sustainability
• Homelessness / Mental Health and Safety
• Vitality of downtown and other business districts
• Open Space

By consensus, the Committee directed staff to create draft goals from the above list to be
finalized at the next meeting.
2. 2018-19 Budget Status Update
Tourism Manager Cano presented the PCC program budget status update for the 2018-19
fiscal year. The PCC received approval for the $2,000 carryover request for the strategic plan
updated in 2018-19. Additionally, it was noted that checks for approved GIA grants have
now been approved for release.

PCC LIAISON REPORTS AND COMMUNICATION
1. GIA Update
It was noted that Committee Members needing assistance answering questions from grant
recipients, can use the Chamber of Commerce account representatives as a primary resource.
No liaison updates were presented at this time.
2. TBID Board Report
Committee Member Wilkins reported on the October 10, 2018 meeting, highlighting
discussion on the Smith Travel Report. Tourism Manager Cano reviewed the September 17,
2018 meeting, highlighting the TBID annual report presented to City Council, October 2,
2018.
3. Tourism Program Update
Tourism Manager Cano presented an update on the recent and upcoming Tourism Program
activities, including:
• Public Hearing for the TBID will be at the City Council meeting on October 16, 2018
• Cal Poly focused promotions
• SLO Discovery Weekends January 24-27 and March 7-10
• Mustang Family Weekend, October 19-21
• MINDBODY Bold Conference
• LA Magazine Food event

1. Began working with Jackie McEwan to plan a wellness focused trip to SLO in February.
2. Worked with Visit Berkeley and Visit Clairmont to host Philadelphia Sun travel writer on
a multistep ‘beyond the campus’ trip to California.
3. Hosted SLO City portion of press trip for freelancer Mary Charlebois.
4. Pitched upcoming hotel openings to LA Based freelancer Tanvi Chheda.
5. Coordinated City of SLO spokesperson and a few hospitality partners to be on camera
with German travel show Wunderschoen.
6. Pitched several SLO properties to House Method for inclusion in their round up of Best
Boutique Hotels in the US.
7. Worked with the team at the newly rebranded Kinney to identify hosting opportunities
into the future.

In October, we initiated our paid social strategy for our “Monday SLO Happenings” posts.Due to
timing we were only able to promote the 10/29 post. However, overall we saw a 52%increase in
total total reach and a 35% increase in total engagement to our “Monday SLO Happenings”
posts when compared to the previous month. Moving forward all “Monday SLO Happenings”
posts will be promoted.

2. Quarter Two (Q2) Seasonal Promotion
Tourism Manager Cano reviewed the program plan for a new Q2 seasonal promotion. The
Marketing Team presented the proposed new promotion marketing plan named, “Our Gift to
You,” noting that it is a $10k investment, and responded to Board questions.

The Board discussed priorities regarding their 2017-19 goals lists, along with possible edits
and new items for 2019-21.

Tourism Manager Cano reviewed the current contract, discussed the usefulness of various
report data, and presented possible contract adjustments or additions for the 2018-19 STR

Tourism Manager Cano reviewed the minutes of the September 12, 2018 meeting.
5. SLO CAL Update
Board Member Pearce provided an update on the Destination Management Strategy process,
additional airline flight work, and provided a brief Hwy. 1 tourism update. Tourism Manager
Cano reported on board staff changes.
6. Tourism Program Update
Due to time constraints, Tourism Manger Cano will provide the Board with an email update
on the Tourism Program.
