L Remarks:
T1 responded to a reported vehicle fire that had been extinguished by the owner. Upon arrival, there was a small amount of
smoke coming from a dark colored SUV. The rear lift gate was open and there was evidence of a burn that had occurred.
There was a pile of burnt cloth on the ground that had been pulled from the rear of the vehicle by the owner and
extinguished. T1 requested a fire investigator based on the story being told by the owner.
The owner stated he had picked up his laundry from the laundry mat the evening before around 7pm. He then brought the
vehicle home and parked it for the rest of the evening. The laundry contents were sheets from a massage business according
to the owner. The next morning the owner was alerted to a fire in the rear of his vehicle by a neighbor. When the owner
arrived, the vehicle was filled with smoke. He stated that when he removed the smoking laundry it "burst into Flames". He
then used a garden hose to extinguish the fire.
T1 waited until Prev. 20 arrived to mop up the laundry. After Prev. 20 completed his investigation, T1 mopped up the contents
and put them into the trash can. The owner was advised to check on the contents in the trash throughout the day to make
sure there was not a rekindle.
The incident was terminated once Prev. 20 completed his investigation and the contents were mopped up.

Additional Narrative (#1 of 1):
02/28/2019
On Friday, February 22, 2019 at approximately 7:55 AM, I was requested, by way of my mobile radio in my department vehicle,
to assist Truck 1 personnel with the investigation of a vehicle fire at 1702 Morro street, San Luis Obispo.
I arrived at approximately 8:05 AM and met with the company officer who showed me a pile of partially burned bed sheets
behind a small Nissan SUV, license number 1 also observed that there was burned and melted headliner and back
seat upholstery and the origin appeared to be the rear cargo compartment. In the cargo area, next to where the owner
pulled the smoldering sheets out, I observed a roll of paper towels that exhibited only minor scorching. The windows of the
vehicle were smoke stained. On the ground behind the vehicle I observed a pile of white sheets with charred fabric with
brown discolored borders between the burned and the unburned. The fire appeared to have originated in the center of the
pile.
I next interviewed the the vehicle owner. explained that he was a massage therapist and had
laundered the sheets the previous evening, folded them and placed them in the rear compartment of his vehicle. He was
alerted the following morning by a neighbor who reported that smoke was coming from the car. opened the back
of the car and threw the smoldering sheets on the ground and reported that they instantly ignited a became free burning. I
asked him if he used organic massage oils and he answered "yes".
I researched spontaneous combustion of massage oil imbedded sheets and found a technical bulletin out of Washington
State that cautioned folding sheets used in the massage industry too soon after being in the dryer. It is my opinion that this
fire originated in the rear cargo area of Nissan. The material first ignited was the sheets, the cause is
spontaneous ignition. Accidental.
