Condoms and needles are not uncommon. Thus a monument and gathering point for the City in many displays of humanity is being altered. Thus to ensure that the Dorn and Russell families and the California Grand Lodge feel that the space is being monitored to ensure the solemnity and celebration we want the event to project, the committee thought that a security presence would be useful. Thank you. Dear Joe, I am sorry that expressing my opinions – based entirely on readily accessible facts – has caused you to consider withholding your support in the future. Although I am a bit confused as you appear not to live in the City of San Luis Obispo but rather in Morro Bay. The reality is – as I mentioned in my original post – that we do in fact live in a country where a disproportionate number of our statues are of white men. Approximately 99.99 %. This is not my opinion, but fact. My issue is that we need to mindful of the fact that representation matters. As a Mayor, I continue to work toward a more inclusive San Luis Obispo. Part of that work means making sure that we do not undertake community projects that continue the historical practice of dismissing and diminishing the contributions of people other than white men. As I stated in the original post, “This is not about being against Teddy Roosevelt but rather expanding the conversation to shed some light on the disparity in who gets representation in our cities.” Although there have been many points brought into the conversation which do bring in the important factual aspects of Teddy Roosevelt that are of deep concern. This is neither racist nor homophobic. It might be helpful for you to have a definition of homophobia,: irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuals. To the best of my knowledge, Teddy Roosevelt did not identify as a homosexual. In fact, given the actual scholarly definitions of both terms, it is impossible to be racist or homophobic by suggesting that erecting a statue of a cisgender, straight, white male does not move us in the direction of a more inclusive and welcoming San Luis Obispo I I. Regarding your request that I make an apology to ALL white men, I hope you can understand why I would not consider that. I believe that you have not fully read and understood my comments regarding the concerns I have about the proposed statue. Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion, but I do encourage you to revisit my original post. Today, he delivered to the president his recommendations for how 21 of the monuments under review should be reduced or opened up to destructive activities. However, the only thing he released to the public was a vague two-page summary report that did not specify which monuments would be altered and how. The fate of the Carrizo Plain National Monument still hangs in the balance, but we will continue to fight for its protection. And we're not alone. The Carrizo Plain National Monument has enjoyed overwhelming public support throughout San Luis Obispo, Kern, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties and beyond: More than 140 local businesses wrote a letter to Interior Secretary Zinke, highlighting the economic benefits of the Carrizo Plain’s monument status and urging him not to shrink its boundaries and to keep its protections in place ‌ More than 40 local elected officials – including 5 of the 7 mayors in San Luis Obispo County – wrote a letter to Interior Secretary Zinke, expressing their support for the Carrizo Plain More than 50 community organizations including museums, botanic gardens, zoos, conservation organizations, historic societies, and others joined together to pledge their support for the Carrizo Plain Nearly 4,000 comments were submitted by central coast residents, specifically citing the Carrizo Plain and urging Secretary Zinke to keep the area protected Approximately 2.8 million public comments were received during the formal review period. More than 99% of those comments were in favor of keeping national monuments protected. 97% of comments pertaining to the Carrizo Plain were supportive of its monument status Thank you to all who have spoken out in support of the Carrizo Plain. The herd is stronger together. While much remains uncertain about the fate of the Carrizo Plain National Monument, we do know that we are going to continue doing everything we can to defend this iconic landscape. Removing even one acre from its boundary would represent an illegal and unacceptable attack on our region’s public lands. That’s why today, we submitted a formal records request under the Freedom of Information Act to learn more about the Secretary’s recommendations and the overwhelming amount of supportive comments he received during his review. We will continue to gather letters, generate support throughout our community, organize rallies, and work together with you and our other friends and allies to defend the Carrizo Plain from this unprecedented assault. Roosevelt on January 6, 1941. In an address known as the Four Freedoms speech (technically the 1941 State of the Union address), he proposed four fundamental freedoms that people "everywhere in the world" ought to enjoy: “The third is freedom from want—which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants—everywhere in the world. “ This Great Discussion is the third in a four-part series on American freedoms. This month we will be discussing “freedom from want”, one our fundamental human rights as defined by FDR. Our guest speaker will talk to us about things FDR said we should expect from our political and economic systems: • Equal opportunity for work. • Security for those who can’t work. • The ending of special privilege for the few. • The preservation of civil liberties for all. DISCUSSION GUIDE: In what he proposed were fundamental human freedoms for all citizens of the world, FDR summarized the values of democracy within the context of the bipartisan consensus on international involvement that existed at the time. A famous quote from the speech prefaces those values: "As men do not live by bread alone, they do not fight by armaments alone." In the second half of the speech, he lists the benefits of democracy, which include economic opportunity, employment, social security, and the promise of "adequate health care". QUESTIONS: Q: Has the lack of bipartisanship doomed FDR’s vision of democracy for all? Q: Has the social contract between all Americans for mutual protection been broken? Q: Does the dependence on money in politics guarantee special privilege for the few? Q: If the current jobless rate is less than 5%, does this mean 95% of working age Americans are satisfactorily employed? Q: Are the civil liberties of Americans being adequately protected by the current Department of Justice, Federal Courts and the Supreme Court of the U.S.? When he returned to the east, he stated that “the most vicious cowboy has more moral principle than the average Indian.”   1901 When Theodore Roosevelt took office in 1901, he already had a long legacy of animosity toward American Indians. “I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are the dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every 10 are,” Roosevelt said during a January 1886 speech in New York. “And I shouldn’t like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth.” With regard to Indians, in 1901 President Theodore Roosevelt stated: “In my judgment the time has arrived when we should definitely make up our minds to recognize the Indian as an individual and not as a member of a tribe. The General Allotment Act is a mighty pulverizing engine to break up the tribal mass.” His Commission of Indian Affairs that all Indians cut off their long hair. According to Grinnell: “Such an order was never before heard of in a free country, and the enforcement of it tends to make the Indians feel themselves to be slaves.” As President. 1903: In his book The Winning of the West, President Theodore Roosevelt wrote: “The truth is, the Indians never had any real title to the soil.” He compared Indian rights to the land with those of cattle ranchers trying to keep immigrants off their vast unfenced ranges. As President. 1908: In New York, President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated a monument to Captain John Underhill, the first professional Indian fighter in the northeast. In 1637, Underhill had been one of the leaders of the genocidal Pequot War. According to Roosevelt, Underhill was one of the men in Colonial times who “helped to lay the foundation of the nation that was to be.” As President. 1909: President Theodore Roosevelt issued eight proclamations which transferred 15 million acres of Indian timber on reservations created by Executive Order to adjacent national forests. The reservations included Fort Apache, Mescalero, Jicallilla, San Carlos, Zuni, Hoopa Valley, Tule River, and Navajo. The proclamation regarding the enlargement of the Trinity National Forest to include most of the Hoopa Reservation stated that after 25 years any un-allotted land on the reservation was to become a part of the national forest and the Hoopa were to lose their rights to this land. Roosevelt’s seven and a half years in office were marked by his support of the Indian allotment system, the removal of Indians from their lands and the destruction of our culture. Although he earned a reputation as a conservationist—placing more than 230 million acres of land under public protection— Roosevelt systematically marginalized Indians, uprooting them from their homelands to create national parks and monuments, speaking publicly about his plans to assimilate them and using them as spectacles to build his political empire, cultural genocide. There is no place in San Luis Obispo City or County for such cultural Genocide.     Fred Collins Chairman   Northern Chumash Tribal Council <image001.jpg> P. O. I expect that both Senate measures to end the shutdown will fail in their scheduled votes tomorrow, assuring that the standoff will continue at least into the weekend. No telling how soon you'll be able to resume anything like a normal schedule. I have a suggestion that Salud might want to consider as a possible way out. Offer a bill that provides the full $5.7 billion in order to construct a "border barrier" - BUT include a condition that the funding cannot be utilized until there is a binding contract with the government of Mexico that obligates them to pay for these barriers in regular installments. Congress agrees to finance the President's campaign pledge for more border barriers, but only if the President also adheres to his campaign pledge to make Mexico pay for it. I'm not sure whether this proposal has already been floated and rejected, but if not - there it is. I just cannot abide by the intransigence of this President and his lap dog Mitch McConnell any longer. Thanks for your attention! John B. New Oil Well and Pipeline Approved in the National Monument Dear Heidi, The Trump Administration has approved a new oil well and pipeline at the base of the Caliente Mountains in the Carrizo Plain National Monument. This is the first oil well approved in the national monument since it was established in 2001, and the approval comes just months after the Trump Administration considered revoking the Carrizo Plain's protected status altogether. The approval of the new well backtracks on a decision made by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) two years ago to remove rusty oil equipment from the oil pad and restore the site to natural conditions. The new well and pipeline are also inconsistent with the Management Plan for the Carrizo Plain National Monument. A victory would swing the balance of the County's highest level of government from a far right majority back to a common sense people-focused approach. Additionally, the previous District 4 race was the most expensive election in SLO County history, and to win Jimmy needs all our support. Meet the candidate while enjoying beer, wine and light appetizers. I pride myself on being an openminded hands-on leader and have connected with many from our community to learn directly from them about what their desires and concerns are. On this invitation, however, I cannot in good conscience abide your request. There is no configuration of your proposed idea that is worthy of my evaluation. It is wrong on its face and for me to pretend otherwise would be false and a waste of both of our time. I encourage you to not fall into the trap that Ms. Zima has of suggesting that my stand on this is an attempt to be 'cool'. I would invite you instead, to truly hear the very legitimate concerns of many regarding the deep and continuing pain that President Roosevelt and many others have caused. He is not alone is his mistakes to be sure, and he no doubt did the best he could with the understanding that he had. You, John, on the other hand, are invited to have a much deeper understanding than Teddy ever could. Please do not make the same mistakes as he did. You have an opportunity to hear the living voice of history in our Chumash leaders and put this effort to rest. I include many of my indigenous friends here and others as I am aware that these types of communications are often misconstrued in translation. And I lift them up here as this is not my story to tell- nor is it yours. We- you and I John- are leaders on their land- land our forefathers stole. I lead every day with that truth in mind and do my very best to lead in a way that honors that legacy-their legacy-their pain, their traditions- their intentions. I will never live up to what could have been had not our ancestors taken everything away from theirs. But I will try- we must try and I encourage you deeply to join me in that attempt. The Great City of San Luis Obispo is so much bigger than any statue could ever hold. I urge you to do the right thing, as Teddy would say, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." You can put this to rest, you have the knowledge and insight of the pain that he caused, you are a guest on the lands of the Chumash People. You and I are guests in Tilhini- uninvited guests. Let's join together and put our resources into lifting up the truth, lifting up unheard voices, lifting up what it is to be in this great place. Let us be leaders worthy of this great honor.
