City Hall – Council Hearing Room The goals of the City of San Luis Obispo Promotional Coordinating Committee are to (1) improve the quality of life available to all residents of and visitors to San Luis Obispo and (2) promote, in a manner consistent with long-range community goals, the development of San Luis Obispo as a regional and tourist center. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Zoya Dixon PUBLIC COMMENT: Each speaker is limited to three minutes of public comment. At this time, you may address the Committee on items that are not on the agenda but are of interest to the public and within the subject matter jurisdiction of the Promotional Coordinating Committee. The Committee may not discuss or take action on issues that are not on the agenda other than to briefly respond to statements made or questions raised, or ask staff to follow up on such issues. SLO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MONTHLY UPDATE 10 mins Representatives from the SLO Chamber will present the report for the public relations activities that occurred over the past month. BUSINESS ITEMS 1. COMMUNITY PLACEMAKING: BANNER PROJECT 10 mins The Committee will continue the work on the banner project including the approve the final banner designs. 2. 2018-19 FINAL BUDGET REVIEW 15 mins The PCC will review the year end program budget for 2018-19 and discuss any final allocations. 3. 2019-20 SLO HAPPENINGS PROGRAM PROPSAL 20 mins At the request of the PCC, staff will present the proposal from Matchfire for the SLO Happenings program content strategy & event entry solution for the committee’s review and approval. 4. SLO CHAMBER OF COMMERECE WORK SCOPES & AGREEMENT TERMS 20 mins The committee will discuss and approve the 2019-21 SLO Chamber of Commerce work scopes and agreement terms for Public Relations, Visitor Services and Grants-In-Aid Support, contingent upon the City Council’s approval of the program budget. 5. 2019-20 BUDGET ALLOCATIONS 15 mins The committee will establish the final recommended budget allocations for the 2019-20 Community Promotions budget. PRESENTATIONS 1. SLO Chamber of Commerce Monthly Report Jacqui Clark-Charlesworth, SLO Chamber Director of Communications and Business Education, reported on the past month activities for the Public Relations contract with the PCC and responded to Committee questions. Highlights included reports on travel writers, new bubblegum alley notoriety, the new format of Race SLO, a Hwy. 1 road trip piece in Outside magazine, and coverage on the new Dallas/SLO flight. Community Placemaking: Banner Project Caty McGrath of iii presented six banner designs using the design style selected at the previous PCC meeting. The Committee discussed including a seventh design to highlight the natural environment as well as specific key words they desire to be used on the banners (Culture, Heritage, Pride, Mission, Tradition, Community, Celebration). Additionally, the Committee gave direction on the prominence and position of the selected key words and “San Luis Obispo” text. Tourism Manager Cano reviewed the style guidelines created for the banner project and the budget Public Comment Dusty Colyer-Worth --End of Public Comment-- ACTION: MOTION BY COMMITTEE MEMBER MATTESON, SECONDED BY COMMITTEE MEMBER GODSEY, CARRIED 7-0, to add a design highlighting the natural environment and modify banner wording to include discussed terms. ACTION: MOTION BY COMMITTEE MEMBER WILKINS, SECONDED BY COMMITTEE MEMBER LEVI, CARRIED 7-0, to approve development of banner Design Standards with direction provided concerning text, within a budget of $3,500. 2. Mid-State Fair Showcase of Cities Creative Proposal Caty McGrath of iii presented the project design concept for window design for the Mid State Fair Showcase of Cities, received input suggestions from the Committee, and responded to Committee questions. Tourism Manager Cano reviewed the budget, noting that take-down costs are not currently included. Community Placemaking: Mural Project Tourism Manager Cano reviewed the budget and status of the parking garage mural project, noting that; the desired location in the Marsh Street garage is not currently available; and an alternate location in the 919 Palm Street parking structure has been identified; and the mural project was added to the streamlined public art process list approved at the April 16th City Council meeting. Public Comment None --End of Public Comment-- ACTION: MOTION BY COMMITTEE MEMBER WILKINS, SECONDED BY COMMITTEE MEMBER GODSEY, CARRIED 7-0, to approve the mural project as presented. 4. 2019-20 Grants-in-Aid – Preliminary Recommendation The Grants-in-Aid Taskforce (Commissioners Godsey, Matteson, and Thomas) presented their grant application evaluation process, preliminary recommendations for funding, and responded to Committee questions. The Committee discussed the recommended funding allocations. Public Comment None --End of Public Comment-- By consensus the Committee made adjustments using the available budget to be presented to the applicants. Public Comment Jim Dantona, CEO, Chamber of Commerce --End of Public Comment— The Committee discussed the various program budget allocations. Concern was expressed regarding the proposed increased costs of the Chamber of Commerce contract without having an increased PCC budget. Tourism Manager Cano reviewed the SLO Happenings program as it has morphed to a website and the committee discussed the need for better event management within the program. By consensus the Committee directed staff to hold discussions with the Chamber of Commerce concerning possible contract options. PCC LIAISON REPORTS AND COMMUNICATION 1. Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Update Tourism Manager Cano reported on refunds from Cal Poly Arts, the SLO History Center, and an expected return from SLO City/County Library. 2. Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) Board Report Tourism Manager Cano reported on the TBID Board meeting of May 9, 2019. 3. Tourism Program Update Tourism Manager Cano presented an update on the recent and upcoming Tourism Program activities, including: • The IFEA World Festival & Event City Award application was reported as too costly and time intensive to pursue. • visitslo.com url acquisition • Conference Center Feasibility Study update (Request for Projects was opened for bids) • Central Coast Tourism Council update • IPW event in Anaheim in June • International media visit June 6th • Special meeting for GIA on May 15th at 5:30 p.m. • Scope of work meeting on May 28th ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m. The next Regular Promotional Coordinating Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 5:30 p.m., in the Council Hearing Room, 990 Palm Street, San Luis Obispo, California. A Parent's (much, much needed) Getaway to SLO We hosted Jacki Carr in partnership with MINDBODY for a wellness influencer activation in SLO. She shared the custom itinerary through her blog and raved about the direct flight from DEN TO SBP among the rest of their experiences. UVPM: 5K 2. 6 things you must do in San Luis Obispo, California U.K. journalist, Ella Buchan highlighted SLO in a piece for Love Exploring highlighting the downtown’s walkability, the city’s ideal central location and the impeccable wine and dining experience. 3. Pacific Coast Highway Road Trip: 8 Places to Stay Along the Way Trivago Magazine featured another story on the Central Coast from Ella Buchan. The piece touted SLO as being the perfect place to take a break from the road as the halfway point between LA & SF. It called SLO’s downtown laid-back, walkable and filled with independent boutiques and stores. Granada Hotel & Bistro was also featured, with their “classically stylish, suplremely comfortable rooms” the main feature. 4. Andrew Firestone’s hotel opens in SLO — and a new nearby restaurant is next The Tribune & Hotel Online covered La Quinta Inn & Suites grand opening as well as neighboring restaurant, 1865 Craft House & Kitchen. They highlighted the dog- friendly trails of Cerro San Luis and Sunset Drive-In as things to do among others. 7. 5 Epic Memorial Day Weekend Vacation Spots on The Central Coast of California Inspirations & Celebrations listed SLO as an ideal weekend vacation destination, specifically highlighting Apple Farm Inn, its on site restaurant & the proximity to “ one of the most popular places to enjoy wine country on the Central Coast”. We saw a decline in total reach for both our “Monday SLO Happenings” and “Ticket Tuesday” posts when compared to April 2019. We are working to determine the cause of the decline in order to address in the coming month. However, we did see an uptick in total entries for our “Ticket Tuesday” posts when compared to April 2019. SLO Happenings event calendar remained within the top 4 most visited pages on SanLuisObispoVacations.com with 2,456 pageviews. EVENT PROMOTION APPLICATION The TBID Board discussed the application received for the 2019 Boots and Brews Country Music Festival event in September 2019. Staff provided members with the 2018 Boots and Brews Country Music Festival final report and statistics.
