The general perception seems to be that most, if not all property taxes, that a citizen pays to the
property tax collector come back to the city for the benefit of the citizens of that city. The above pie
chart shows how the property tax dollar is divided up between schools, county government, special
districts and cities. Roughly seven cents of every dollar paid by Morro Bay property owners comes
to the City of Morro Bay's General Fund. The Fiscal Year 1995-96 estimated property tax revenue
is $1,207,104 which equates to approximately 23% of General Fund revenues.

all tax supported agencies within the county. In FY 95 the county will be billing
propertyowners within the entire county for a total of $179,232,176. Of that
amount, a total of $1,209,434 will be forwarded to the City of Morro Bay.
This amount represents seven -tenths of one percent (0.7%).
As a whole all cities within the county receive about seven percent (7%) of total
collections. Schools receive 63%, special districts receive 6%, and the county
receives the remaining 24%.

Sixty percent of all revenue accruing to the General Fund comes from three sources. The largest
revenue source is property tax, but the City's share of each property tax dollar is approximately
seven cents. The rest of the dollar is divided as follows: 63 cents goes to Schools. 24 cents goes
to County government and 6 cents goes to other special districts.
General sales & use tax is a major revenue source to the General Fund. Of the 7.25% rate for the
area, approximately 951100 of a cent comes back to the City. Transient occupancy tax is also a
major revenue source to the General Fund and is computed at the rate of 9% of basic room rental
cost. Currently, this is the only major revenue source that the City Council can control.
